Change in the here and now
June 28th 06, 7.30 - 9.30pm, £5
at Friends Meeting House, St Giles, Oxford
An intoductory evening for the general public and helping
professionals, offering background information and an experiential taster.
Focus on the past, future - or present?
Much of counselling and therapy relies on explorations of
the past, based on the recognition that current patterns and difficulties
have a developmental origin and are rooted in the past. Other approaches
focus on our vision for the future, arguing that we need to leave the
past behind and take responsibility for shaping the kind of future we
want.
Both these principles are, of course, valid, but they also
can lead to an obsessive or forced attitude which causes as many problems
as it seeks to solve.
All change happens in the present
The idea of attending to the here and now is
a simple, effective and often radical method, used in a wide range of
therapeutic and personal development approaches, notably Gestalt Therapy.
It provides a powerful and immediate way of working, based on the notion:
all we need to allow change to occur is already available, right here
and now.
A practical demonstration
If appropriate, the evening will include a demonstration,
working with a volunteer.
